Degree Committee for the Faculty of Physics & Chemistry


The School of Physical Sciences administers a fund to support research students with essential extra costs associated with a major piece of work carried out away from Cambridge and which is an integral part of their of research.

Please do check your eligibility and understand the uses/restrictions of the fund, and the Terms & Conditions before you make your application. If you would like financial assistance for shared resources (e.g. field assistant shared between 4 researchers) please only request funds to cover your share of the costs. In this Faculty, the Fund is administered by the Degree Committee Office and disbursed via your departmental finance offices. Any funding which cannot be used for the purposes for which it was granted must be returned to the fund managers. If you have not used the whole of your grant, please see your departmental finance office to arrange for part or all of the grant to be returned so that other students can benefit from it.


How to apply

  1. Apply for Leave to Work Away from Cambridge well in advance of travel. If approval has not yet been received by the time you make your application please note this. Evidence of approval will be required before any funds are released.
  1. Complete the Application Form in consultation with your supervisor
  1. Submit the form at least 1 month before your departure to the Degree Committee Office. Remember to attach documents supporting your cost estimates.
  1. You will be notified by e-mail of the outcome of your application. If your application is successful you will be able to collect your funding in the form of an advance from your Departmental finance office. Please ask them what financial records and/or receipts they will require from you to confirm how the funds were spent.
  1. After the trip please submit the final report form template we will send you on award.

Office closures

The Degree Committee for the Faculty of Physics & Chemistry will be closed from 5pm on Thursday 28 March 2024 and will reopen again on Tuesday 2 April 2024.
Research degree theses should still be submitted by your submission deadline even if that falls over the holiday period.
