Degree Committee for the Faculty of Physics & Chemistry

Examiners have more responsibilities than Assessors. They are appointed for the whole cohort of students to set the papers for the examinations, oversee the exam, they attend Examination Board meetings and they sign off the marksheet. Examiners also share responsibility for the decisions of the Examination Board.

Assessors are usually appointed to mark papers, dissertations (which may or may not include an oral), and other assessed work for individual students, but have not other role in the examination of the cohort.

Responsibilities of Examiners and Assessors can be found in the Examiners Guide and specific guide for Examiners and Assessors of the MPhil by Advanced Study and MRes, which can be found on the Student Registry website.

Documentation necessary to undertake examiner/assessor duties, including the examination structure and marking/classing criteria, will be provided by the Senior Examiner.

Every examiner (not assessor) must be present at the final Examiners' meeting where the marks of the candidates are agreed. The meeting date is usually set in Michaelmas term for August/September in the following year. Please add it to your diary. Examiners who for a grave cause are unable to attend the meeting must seek permission from the Vice-Chancellor via the Education Quality and Policy Office to be absent.
