Degree Committee for the Faculty of Physics & Chemistry

For the MRes and MPhil with taught elements, the Department nominates to the Degree Committee:

  • one moderating External Examiner who sets the standard of the examination in the context of similar degree courses in the UK; samples work; moderates marks; participates in vivas; and reports their views of the course and examination to the Vice-Chancellor;
  • a Senior Examiner/Chair of Examiners who takes the lead in examination matters including delivery marks and minutes of the final Examiners' meeting and responding to Examination Review requests;
  • as many examiners and assessors as are necessary to set the papers and mark the papers and dissertations. The main project report will be referred to two examiners or assessors, neither of whom is the supervisor of the project (in some cases, both of these may be internal to the university, or one may be external).

The roles of examiners and assessors and who can be appointed to these roles can be found here.
