Video-conference Viva
A video conference viva can be allowed in some exceptional cases. If this is the case, please contact the Degree Committee office to seek permission.
Things to remember when setting up a video conference viva:
- The candidate and both Examiners must give consent for viva by video conference.
- Usually, the Internal Examiner arranges the viva in Cambridge (but the student or the student’s supervisor might help with the arrangements as well).
- A three-way video conference is not permitted.
- Video conferencing costs will need to be borne by the department/supervisor/group/the candidate – the Student Registry will not refund the cost of using video conference facilities.
- Video conferencing equipment and the quality of connection should be tested at least one day in advance of the examination, ideally without the candidate. Where an Examiner is not confident in its use technical support must be available during the viva.
- All parties must understand that in the event of any failure with the technology, before or during the viva, it will not be possible for the examination to continue and it will be necessary for the viva to be rescheduled.
The University Information Services offer a video-conferencing service.
