Degree Committee for the Faculty of Physics & Chemistry

You should make every effort to meet your submission deadlines for your thesis / dissertation / other assessed work. You can find your submission deadline(s) at:

  • PhD students - your CamSIS self-service
  • MPhil by thesis students - on the Cambridge Student page and here
  • MRes or MPhil (taught) - your course handbook

If you are really not going to be able to submit on time, and you have a valid reason, you can consider submitting an application to extend your deadline. Extension is not guaranteed; each case is looked at on its merits.

Application guidance and further information can be found on the Cambridge Students website:

Degree by thesis

In your application you should provide a clear explanation of why you will not be able to submit by your deadline AND the reasons why you should not be withdrawn to complete your write-up at home.

It is not expected for you to be applying for more than one term of extension at any time. In general, an MPhil student could reasonably ask for one term in total. For a PhD student it is not normally agreed for you to extend beyond the end of a fifth year. The University wants you to aim to submit before the start of the next term if possible, so if you ask for slightly more than one term, don't be surprised it we reduce this to one term.

If you do not submit by your deadline and have not applied and had an extension agreed by Student Registry, you will be withdrawn from study and would only be reinstated upon submission of your thesis or application for reinstatement. Applications for an extension submitted after your submission deadline will automatically be denied.

Degree with taught elements

If you are a candidate for an MRes or MPhil with taught elements, you are not normally allowed an extension. Please consult your Course Senior Examiner in the first instance if you have good reason to need one (e.g. illness) or you may incur a penalty for late submission.

If you can't find the page you are looking for or find a broken link do let us know (please use the email link in the 'Contact us' section below).

Office closures

The Degree Committee for the Faculty of Physics & Chemistry will be closed from 5pm on Thursday 28 March 2024 and will reopen again on Tuesday 2 April 2024.
Research degree theses should still be submitted by your submission deadline even if that falls over the holiday period.
